Depression


Depression is a mental health condition that makes people feel persistently sad, hopeless, and uninterested in activities they once enjoyed. It can cause physical symptoms like fatigue, changes in appetite, and trouble sleeping. But it is more than simply feeling unhappy, it consists of presistent feelings of sadness, hopelssness, apathy, sleep dissorders, fatigue and appetite changes.

Symptoms

Symptoms can be mold or severe and range from constantly feeling unhappy or a loss of interest. Everyone experiences Depression differently and at different extremities, but some common symptoms are:

  • fatigue

  • insomnia

  • excessive sleeping

  • weight loss or gain

  • physical pain

  • Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood

  • Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism

  • Feelings of irritability, frustration, or restlessness

  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities

  • Fatigue, lack of energy, or feeling slowed down

  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions

  • Difficulty sleeping, waking too early in the morning, or oversleeping

  • Changes in appetite or unplanned weight changes

  • Physical aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems without a clear physical cause that do not go away with treatment

  • Thoughts of death or suicide or suicide attempts

  • Changes in mood or behavior

What Causes it?

Depression has many different causes, like stresful life events. There are internal and external causes to depression.

External:

  • poverty and debt

  • stress

  • alcohol and drugs

  • bereavement

  • work problems

  • bullying

  • loneliness

  • pregnance and childbirth

  • relationship problems

Internal:

  • personality traits

  • childhood experences

  • family history

  • long term health problems
